Lessons learned from different scales of intervention underscore the critical need for and importance of local engagement, regional coordination, national policy integration, and multisectoral partnerships to build effective environmental resilience. For example, the lesson we can learn from our experiences at the community level is that if community initiatives succeed it is often because they are led by the communities themselves, who know best their local challenges and needs as well as the most suitable solutions with a maximum positive and sustainable externality on the environment. The pillars that underpin such successes include local leadership, community engagement and participation, and local initiatives and traditions.
