Challenge of local pharmaceutical production for UHC in Africa (drugs, devices, and vaccines)

Over 90% of malaria deaths and 70% of all people living with HIV/AIDS are in Africa. Approximately 95% of all drugs used in Africa are imported and the continent accounts for only 3% of global drug production.

The COVID-19 pandemic has further highlighted Africa’s vulnerabilities in accessing life-saving medicines, vaccines and health technologies. More and more African governments are considering the provision of safe, effective and affordable medicines and vaccines as a matter of national security.

This panel will be an opportunity to discuss and exchange on the challenges and solutions for strengthening local production, promoting technology transfer and innovation, reviewing the agreement on trade-related aspects of intellectual property rights and intellectual property rights from the perspective of strengthening local production.
